With the Himalayas as a backdrop, HEAL Nepal is helping keep a mountainside playground safe — one fence repair at a time.

A playground is never just a patch of ground with equipment on it. For children, it’s where the ordinary becomes extraordinary – where a slide becomes a launchpad, a climbing frame becomes a mountain to summit, and a swing set becomes a spaceship. Every structure on that ground doubles as the setting for an imaginative adventure and that kind of open-ended play does real work: it builds creativity, abstract thinking, and cognitive skills that carry far beyond recess.
But none of that happens if the space isn’t safe. That’s why HEAL Nepal has been supporting Sarbodaya Secondary School in Helambu-05, Sindhupalchowk with maintenance of the playground’s boundary fence.
Why the Fence Matters
Perched on a mountainside, the school’s playground sits close to steep terrain — which makes a secure, well-maintained fence more than a formality. It marks a clear boundary between play space and hazard, keeps children from wandering into danger during games and gives teachers and caregivers one less thing to worry about while kids are outside.
A sturdy fence doesn’t just prevent accidents – it changes how freely children can play. When the boundary is clear and secure, kids can run, climb and explore without a teacher needing to hover over every step and that freedom is part of what makes a playground work as a space for real, unstructured play.
Supporting the Basics
This kind of maintenance work rarely makes headlines, but it’s foundational. Alongside HEAL Nepal’s education and healthcare programs in the region, keeping school infrastructure like this playground fence safe and functional is part of making sure students have an environment where they can simply be kids, securely and with room to imagine.
