357 Patients, One Day: Inside Sermathang’s Free Health Camp

From eye exams to blood pressure checks, HEAL Nepal brought a full day of free healthcare to a village where the nearest clinic can be hours away.

For many families in Sermathang, a doctor’s visit means a long walk down rugged mountain trails, an unreliable ride and hours away from home. On August 16, 2024, HEAL Nepal brought healthcare to their doorstep instead. With support from Wilde Ganzen, Stichting Nepal, WVAF and a team of community volunteers, HEAL Nepal ran a One Day General Health Camp offering free checkups, consultations and medicine – no travel, no fees, no barriers.
From 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. the camp turned into a full-scale community clinic, seeing patients of every age and background from Sermathang and the surrounding area.

A Day of Screenings and Checkups
Every patient who walked through the door was registered and guided through a set of core health checks: blood pressure, blood sugar, oxygen saturation and weight. From there, health assistants offered personalized counseling – covering everything from diet and exercise to managing chronic conditions before dispensing any needed medication at no cost.

Who the Camp Reached
The camp drew a genuinely diverse crowd – farmers, laborers, homemakers, students and army personnel, spanning every generation:
- 138 patients were ages 0–15
- 145 patients were ages 16–59
- 74 patients were ages 60–100
Women made up a slight majority of attendees – 191 women and 166 men reflecting strong turnout across the whole community.
Elderly patients wait with their registration forms — a population the camp made a special effort to reach.
What the Camp Found
Vision problems were among the most common concerns, with many patients — especially older adults — screened for conditions like presbyopia, cataracts, and astigmatism. Beyond eye care, the team saw a steady stream of coughs and colds, mild fevers, and the back and knee pain that so often comes with age and a lifetime of physical labor.
Patients with more serious conditions, including advanced cataracts requiring surgery, were referred onward to hospitals equipped to treat them — ensuring the camp’s reach extended beyond just the day itself.

Getting There Was Half the Battle
Running a health camp in Sermathang means planning around the mountains themselves. Rugged terrain and limited roads made it hard to move medical supplies and equipment into the village. Weather can turn quickly at this altitude, communication infrastructure is thin, and the team had to lean on local knowledge and alternative channels just to coordinate the event. None of it stopped the camp from happening — it just meant more careful planning and a lot of help from the community.
What Patients Told Us
Feedback from the day was overwhelmingly positive. Patients repeatedly expressed gratitude for care they otherwise would have had to travel hours to receive, and many said the camp left them more aware of the importance of regular checkups and preventive health.
