Free Health Camp Brings Check-ups to Sermathang’s Elderly Residents

HEAL Nepal’s mobile health team spent the day at the Hyolmo Palri Health Center, offering free check-ups, consultations and medicine to a village where healthcare access is often out of reach.

For many elderly residents of Sermathang, a village tucked into the hills of Helambu, a routine check-up isn’t routine at all — it means a long walk or ride to the nearest clinic with a doctor on hand. On 9 September 2024, HEAL Nepal brought that care to their doorstep instead, running a free health camp out of the Hyolmo Palri Health Center.
Nineteen villagers came through over the course of the day — 14 women and 5 men — each receiving a full round of screening: blood pressure, blood sugar, a general physical exam and a one-on-one consultation with a health assistant. Anyone who needed medication left with it, free of charge.
More Than a Check-up
The camp is part of HEAL Nepal’s broader push to bring primary healthcare, preventive screening, maternal and child health services, dental care and mental health support to communities that mobile clinics and community outreach are often the only way to reach.
Alongside the physical exams, health assistants spent time talking through what the results meant — flagging risk factors, answering questions and offering practical advice on managing common conditions that come with age. For a population that rarely gets facetime with a healthcare provider that conversation was as valuable as the exam itself.

Why It Matters
- Early detection: screenings surfaced health issues that participants could act on early, rather than after they became serious.
- Health literacy: one-on-one counseling helped participants understand their own conditions and what to do about them.
- Access: for a village with limited routine access to medical facilities, the camp was, for some, their first check-up in years.

Running a camp like this isn’t without friction — coordinating supplies, staff and equipment on short timelines, navigating language and cultural differences between providers and patients and staying flexible when weather or unexpected needs shift the day’s plan. HEAL Nepal’s team leaned on its local health assistants to bridge those gaps, prioritizing urgent needs first and adapting as the day went on.
Looking Ahead
The Sermathang camp reinforced something HEAL Nepal has seen across its work in Helambu: that consistent, accessible care changes outcomes for communities that are otherwise underserved. The organization plans to continue running camps like this one as part of its ongoing commitment to community-based health and well-being in rural Nepal.
